Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples—
here’s how to make it a celebration of YOU.
As a 24 year old, I have had my fair share of Valentine’s Days, and have experienced many of the emotions that are associated with this holiday. I know that if you are not in a relationship or do not have a significant other, then you can be unsure of how you should be spending your Valentine’s Day. Let me be your guide and give you some fun ways to spend your valentine’s day, solo!
Constantly having to see the glittery hearts and red roses covering every single store and restaurant once January 1st hits and everyone takes down their holiday lights. The overly-commercialized society we live in is constantly shoving the next holiday down our throat, but V-Day seems to hit hard sometimes.
Whether you have had bad experiences in the past, are missing someone, longing for love, or just don’t want to be alone on February 14th, then you have come to the right place!
BTW – I made some cute, self-care v-day inspired phone wallpapers, click here to download them for free! 🙂
Here are 7 things to do on Valentine’s Day without a partner:
1. do something you have been wanting to do for a while but have been pushing off
Have you been telling yourself that you want to try go to a restaurant by yourself, or wanted see a movie by yourself, or go to a pilates or yoga class.. but you never have because you have been too scared to do it alone? Trust me, I have been there. I know it can be super intimidating to put yourself out there like that, but it is SO worth it.
What better an opportunity to do it than now? Being comfortable with being by yourself is such a valuable skill. Being independent is so liberating and empowering, it is contagious. I encourage you to take the leap of faith in yourself, I know you can do it!
Tell me something you have been wanting to try alone in the comments below!
2. book a spa day or have an at-home spa day
Treat yourself! Book yourself a day at a spa, a massage, a manicure, or a facial, anything to pamper yourself! This is YOUR day to treat yourself with the love and care you DESERVE. If you want a guide to a spa experience, check out my post!
If you don’t feel like going out, then bring the spa to you! Go to your local drug store or hop on amazon and grab some goodies! Get anything that makes you happy and feel pampered. Some ideas are: face masks, essential oil shower tablets, bath bombs, nail polish, hair masks, new makeup, etc..
Dim the lights, turn on some Netflix or grab a book and CHILL. This is your special night.
3. go out!
Grab your girlfriends, do your makeup, get dressed up and take each other on a date! Valentine’s Day is NOT just about being in a relationship – it is about celebrating love. So grab those special people in your life that are always there for you and show them how much they mean to you. Go to dinner, a party, dancing, a movie, anything that gives you guys an excuse to get out of the house and make some memories!
4. Unplug
Don’t torture yourself by scrolling on social media.. we both know it won’t do you any good. You will most likely wind up seeing the dozen IG stories of roses and chocolates and start comparing yourself to others. Going down that rabbit hole is simply NOT NECESSARY. You know people are only showing their highlight reels, so don’t let that ruin your night or think poorly of yourself.
5. Just stay in and chill
There are no rules, you don’t have to go out if that’s not your thing. I personally love staying home and having time to myself. Have a movie marathon! Or binge a new show! I have been watching Abbott Elementary and Gossip Girl and loving every minute of it. You don’t have to do anything out of the ordinary or create a self-care night etc, you do you! No need to give any time or energy to the holiday.
6. Host a galentine’s day party!
My best friend is hosting one this year and let me tell you, she is going ALL OUT and I am so here for it. She thrifted a bunch of vintage china and decor and created a beautiful menu for the night. She is having so much fun planning it and now all of us girls have these plans we are SO looking forward to. It will be nothing but good vibes and friends using the holiday as an excuse to spend more time together and get all dressed up!
It doesn’t have to be something super fancy, you can order some takeout and have your best friend come over and watch a new cheesy rom-com [you all the streaming services release tons of them at this time of the year].
7. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself or on Valentine’s day
At the end of the day, it is a commercialized holiday to get people to buy tons of things, try to materialize their love and make everyone in the world feel like they need to have a “valentine” to celebrate. I think over the years society has been changing the narrative around V-day… purging out some of the toxicity associated with it and removing the power it holds.
Whether you are in a relationship or not, be a little selfish and use this time to love yourself ! You are not alone, you deserve to feel special! Give yourself that time and energy, and I promise you won’t regret it.
